dc.description.abstractThis project investigated the kind of interferences that occur in students' translations as well as the effects these interferences have on the intended message. Specifically, we investigated the kind of interferences that occur when the'translation student is translating a text from English to Kiswahili and from Kiswahili to English. The types of interferences investigated included the following: Lexical interference i.e. interference at the word level, syntactic interference i.e. interference at the sentence level and Grammatical interference; where translator ignores the structural differences between the two languages involved or gets influenced by the norms in either of the languages and thus consciously or unconsciously transfers some of the features from the source language into the target language. However, we dealt with interferences which appear in students' translations unintentionally. We applied both qualitative and quantitative analysis. We used the qualitative method to analyse the syntactic, lexical and grammatical interferences in student's translations. The quantitative method was used to account for the number of interferences. There were 274 lexical 262 grammatical and 170 syntactic interferences that were found in student's translations. The main objective of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the occurrence of interference in students' translations. The thesis consists of five chapters: Chapter one focuses on the introductory elements of the study which include the background, statement of the problem, research methodology among others. Chapter two focuses on the analysis of interference in students' translations. This part was divided into three sub chapters namely: ) Lexical interference. ) Syntactic interference. ) Grammatical interference. The analysis of interference occurring in students translations forms the bulk of this research. As far as the outline of this thesis is concerned, Chapter three deals with the factors that are responsible for this phenomenon. Chapter four looks into the effects that the interferences analyzed have on the message intended. Chapter five concludes this thesis and gives recommendation for further research. The questionnaire to find out the students views and opinions on this phenomenon is also included in this chapter.en_US
