Challenges to Strategy Implementation in Health Focused Ngos in Nairobi

Abstract

This study aimed at determining the challenges of strategy implementation among health focused non-governmental organizations and the measures employed to overcome the challenges. Challenges to strategy implementation can either be institutional or operational. Institutional factors are established within the context of the organisation whereas operational ones relate to the organisational processes This study was a census survey of all the 202, health focused health Non- Governmental organizations in Nairobi as at September 2008. Mail questionnaires were used to collect data. The analysis of the data gave a generalized view for comparison with literature. The findings revealed that structure, leadership, organizational objectives, policies and work procedures and culture influenced strategy implementation. The measures that can be employed to overcome these challenges include motivating employees, allocating adequate resources for implementing activities, top management commitment and adequate communication. The study concluded that strategy implementation is a very important aspect in health focused Non-Governmental organizations and has an imperative influence on their efficiency and effectiveness. Employees as well as management commitment overcomes the many bottlenecks of strategy implementation. Whereas the study was limited on the sample size, the research findings concur with descriptive literature and theory. The scope of the study was limited to health focused Non-Governmental organisations in Nairobi. However because of the small sample size used for this study (N= 202), the conclusions are therefore limited. The reliability of the method of data collection hindered the response rate. This study recommends further research to examine the challenges of strategy implementation on organizational performance.
