Effect of organizational culture on performance of Kenya power and lighting company
Abstract
The study objective was to establish the effect of organizational culture on performance at
Kenya Power. The study adopted descriptive survey design. The target population of the
study was employees of Kenya Power and a representative sample of 250 employees was
used. Stratified random sampling was used to choose the actual elements of the study sample
from three types of occupational groups i.e top management, middle level management and
operational staff. The study used primary data that was collected using Denison culture
model. The questionnaires were the only primary data collection instruments used in the
study. The collected questionnaires were inspected for completeness and coded in Statistical
Package for Social Sciences (Version 20) for analysis and presentation. Regression analysis
model was used to determine the causal relationship between the organizational culture and
performance. The study established that there exists a strong and positive relationship
between organizational culture and performance and that consistency, involvement,
adaptability and mission greatly determine the organizational performance. This study
concludes that for organizational performance to improve, organizational culture should be
supportive and compatible with intended strategies and day to day running of activities of
employees and should not only put more emphasizes on organizational cultures that improve
organizational performance but also cultures that support the overall wellbeing of the
employees. The study recommends that all organizations should put more efforts on the
adoption of good a organizational culture since culture has today become a strategic tool in
the market for attaining a sustainable competitive advantage and also facilitate trainings and
learning for the employees to be able to adapt to new changes, strategies and policies that
directly involve the employees in the organization. In addition, organizations should ensure
that the organizational culture is well aligned with the organizational strategies and policies
There is need for further research to establish the effect of group culture, regional culture and
professional culture on organizational performance. There is also need for further research to
establish the effect of organizational culture on performance in other State Corporations and
also in the private sector for comparison purposes.
