Surgical conditions of the urinary tract in cattle
Abstract
Diseases of the urinary system necessitating surgery are not commonly encountered other than those procedures associated with urinary calculi or occurring as a result. of traumatic injuries. The effect of surgery on the urinary tract must be considered as-it may interfere with the future re¬productive life of a breeding animal. Such operations may also prove economically unsound (Walker & Hull 1984; Lundvall 1974). The surgical conditions of the urinary tract in the bo¬vine can be broadly divided into those commonly affecting males such as urethral obstruction due to calculi, rupture of the uretlira or bladder; those affecting females such as pyelonephritis and eversion of the urinary bladder and those affecting calves such as patent or pervious urachus.
