dc.description.abstractThis research was conducted to determine the factors contributing to underperformance in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education students in Kirinyaga county day secondary schools .The literature review gave information on global, Africa and regional; Kenya included academic performance of examination. This research studied factors influencing K.C.S.E. performance in day schools in Kirinyaga County. These factors included; political interference, indiscipline, labor dynamics, the proliferation of illicit brews, the ratio of teachers to students , pressure among peers , resources available in schools , the level of motivation among the students , and background of students . The questionnaire was the main instrument of data collection. There were 215 respondents from 6 schools under study.75.72% were in agreement that a high ratio of teacher to students had great influence on performance in K.C.S.E. by hindering a good physical contact between students and teachers which result to poor grasping of the concept being taught and also poor concentration per student.en_US
