The relationship between principals management of curriculum and KCSE performance in selected secondary schools in Migori District
Abstract
This study investigated the management of curriculum and instruction in selected secondary schools in Migori District Kenya, It sought to ('stain the relationship between the principals' management of curriculum and Ill)\\ this impacted on K.C.S.E performance. The justification for the study arose trom the need tn address the poor performance of most schools within the district ill K.C.S.E over the years. This is because most schools do not regiskr verv good K.CST results and consequently most students in Migori district do not qualitv to join public universities. This to a large extent has been taken to he as a result of poor management of curriculum and instruction by principals
Employing an ex-post-facto design. the study entailed collecting data from 15 schools in Migori district using three different types of questionnaires for principals. teachers and students. The collected data was analyzed descriptively. The findings strived at establishing any direct relationship between the principal Is personal attributes and systems of management of curriculum and ho« this impacted on students performance in K.C.S.E. Factors found to affect performance in these schools were identified as: inadequate learning facilities. lack of teachers in kcv subjects, lack of adequate textbooks. lack of school fees. pupils attitudes towards teachers and certain subjects. poor time management and programming by students. poor communication between teachers and students among others. The study then
made pertinent recommendations for further research. One of whicl: being that principals should identify and clarify school goals. missions and visions to teachers and students so as to ensure that all are committed to them. This will make them go
beyond being mere phrases and catch words on school baclt-es and sign posts so as to become identification symbols and statements or purpose that each member of the school community should be committed to. Principals should strive to build school
cultures that correspond to the stated goals. visions and missions.
