Correlation of signs, symptoms and histology to the weight of prostate in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Abstract
29 patients with clinical diagnosis of Benign
Prostatic enlargement were studied.
Post-voiding residual urine volume was measured for
all the patients who did not have catheter in-situ and
for those who were catheterised were taken to have at
least 200mls according to the criteria used by Hiroshi
Ohe, M.D.19 The patients then underwent open
prostatectomies using retropubic and transversical
routes. The wet weights of the enucleated adenomas
was taken after which the prostatic specimens were
prepared for histology. Staining was done with
haematoxylin and eosin. A median of 6 blocks were
prepared per prostate by routine section technique.
Residual urine volume, compared to the weights of the
prostates was found to have a significant relationship
(t2 27=3.16 P>O. 001).
Mean weights of prostates varied with histological
type but the relationship was not statistically
significant (F2,27=1.393, P>0.05).
Prostates with predominantly stromal type were not
necessarily smaller than those of other histological
types. Thus failing to prove the dogma that smaller
prostates are fibrotic (Blandy, Dorflinger)
