Abstract
In this study, 320 patients who had caeserian section at Pumwani
Maternity Hospital were inlerviewed by means of a s tructured
questionnaire administered by the chief investigator. They were
also examined daily till they Ieft the hospital.
From the study, it was found that 94.8% all the patients were
less than 34 years. 78.1% were married. 60% were semiliterate with It
7 years or less of education. 36% of the patients were n ulliparou s
and 91.6% had 4 or less children. The caeserian section rate was
found to be 6. 8%. 36% of the cae sc.rian sections were primary and
64% were repeat. The perinatal mortality rate was 118 per 1000
and the maternal mortality rate was found to be 0.63%':The maternal
morbidity rate was 19.0%.
