Abstract

This study was done in Kenyatta National Hospital, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology over a period of C:months (from September 1982 to February 1983). The patients were recruited from both the Gynaecology Clinic and the Infertility Clinic, both of which are situated at Kenyatta National Hospital. The patients who presented with complaints of infertility and had been investigated were recruited. A total of 140 couples were recruited for the study. Out of these 110 couples were completely analyse while 30 couples dropped out. Of the 110 couples analysed, 49 couples had no aetiological factors identified while 61 couples had obvious aetiological factors of infertility. All the patients were subjected to semen cervical mucus contact t.e st; (SCMC). Those who had a high shaking phenomenon were further subjected to Post CoitaL Test (PCT) A combination of a poor post coital test and a high shaking phenomenon were considered evidence of presence of antibodies .. Of the total 110 patients 24 couples were found to have positive antisperm anibodies. Out of the 24, 18 had no other cause of infertility. Hence their cause of infertility could have been due to antisperm antibodies . It is recommended that in patients with infertility, and no obvious aetiological factor at least a post coital test should be done. This should be incorporated in our routine investigations. That way we might be able to pick more patients with antisperm antibodies.
