dc.description.abstractThis study was set to establish factors which influence performance in science subjects among secondary schools in Matinyani zone, Kitui district. The study covered the period between 2003-2006 and involved ten schools. The Schools comprised of mixed and single sex, day and boarding schools, and provincial and district schools in the zone with nineteen schools and total population of 3804 students. Performance refers to the student academic level of achievement in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination. It is graded on a twelve-point scale from lowest E, which corresponds to one point to highest A, which corresponds to twelve points. The zone was chosen because the schools there in expressed the most profound characteristics of the factors and trends under investigation, with average performance in sciences ranging from D+ (4 points) to C-(5 points). It was therefore assumed that the findings ofthe study would be more representative. The sample of the study comprised of 10% of the accessible population (380 students) and was selected through simple random sampling. Through self administered questionnaires the study elicited views on factors influencing performance in science subjects among secondary schools in Matinyani zone, Kitui district. The sample also comprised of 10% of science teachers and 30% of school heads in the zone. The data collected was categorized and coded. It was then analyzed first by describing and summarizing it by use of descriptive statistics. In this, mode was used to determine the responses which occurred most frequently. The data was then analyzed by use of frequency distribution tables which was then presented graphically. To present them graphically, histograms and bar charts were used. The data was also analyzed by use of percentages. The results of this study is reported under headings which depend on frequency distribution scores or responses and percentages obtained. In line with the findings, a summary, conclusions and recommendations were made.en
