The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of teacher motivation on student's performance in KCSE in public secondary school in Tana River District, Kenya. The objectives of the study were to determine the sources of teacher motivation, the opinions of teachers towards the sources of motivation and to study the role of the school management on teacher motivation against the student performance in the KCSE examination. Descriptive research design was used. The target population was the head teachers, deputy head teachers, and teachers in Tana River district. The Krejcie and Morgan (1970) Table was used to select the respondents with 14 head teachers, 14 deputy head teachers, and 73 teachers making a total of 101 respondents as the sample size of the total population. Questionnaires for head teachers, deputy head teachers, and teachers were used to collect data. The questionnaires were validated through appraisal from the supervisors and then subjected to a pilot study. The instniment was tested for reliability through test-retest technique and reliability coefficient was 0.876. Descriptive statistics was used to collect data assisted by Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) programme and the results presented in form of Tables and pie-charts. The findings of the study were that there were very few intrinsic motivators that attracted the teachers to join the teaching profession in the district. Majority of the teachers (40%) stated that they were dissatisfied with the number of hours they worked and it was not comparable with the remuneration they received. The fact that all the head teachers and deputy head teachers had cited cases of teachers resigning from the profession in search of greener pastures is a testimony to the fact that teachers were demotivated. About the role of school management in teacher motivation, the school management led by the head teacher has the role of ensuring that teachers enjoy their stay in the schools for them to prepare the students for KCSE and other school examination. The recommendations of this study were that the government should ensure that teaching is treated like the other professions in the public service through issuance of remuneration that is comparative to the individual professional and academic qualification. This way, constant cases of teacher transfer from rural to urban areas will be minimized. The conclusion of the study was that motivation of teachers was important in the schools and the unsatisfied need created tension that stimulated drives within teachers which generated a search for behavior to counter their demotivation and thus poor student performance in KCSE. Teachers should be given good pay and allowances, ideal accommodation, fair opportunity for upward mobility !n the profession and above all, they need to be appreciated for their effort.en_US
