The study sought to determine the influence of the family background and teacher's indiscipline on secondary schools students' indiscipline in Kisii central district. In addition the study sought to identify the challenges the secondary school principals face in indiscipline management in their schools. The research design used in this study was descriptive survey design. This design therefore was used to collect data on the determinants of indiscipline among students of secondary schools in Kisii central district. The target population in this study comprised of 40 public secondary schools out ofthe over 40 schools in Kisii central district, where 40 principals and 9000 students will be targeted. Two questionnaires were used as research instruments and they targeted public secondary schools principals and students respectively. The questionnaires were use to solicit from the respondents since they were the main stake holders in their schools. In order to facilitate data analysis, the researcher systematically organized the raw data collected by use of questionnaires. The data collected was analyzed systematically to solicit answers to research questions respectively. Data analysis was done by the use of table, frequencies and percentages, finally conclusions were carefully drawn and recommendations made for concrete implementation. The study revealed that teachers use different methods to instill discipline among students in schools. These methods include corporal punishment, manual work, and suspensions. But in the majority of the respondents (65%) revealed that corporal punishment is used by teachers and parents to instill discipline to students. This makes students to be more indiscipline leading to some of them dropping out of school due to fear of corporal punishment. The study also revealed that the bebaviour of parents (100%) can determine the indiscipline of students at school. Therefore, if the parents' behaviours are good their children would initiate them and be well disciplined at school. But if the parents behave badly at home by either drinking alcohol or taking drugs, even stealing, their children will follow suit and become undisciplined at school. It was also evident that in all schools (100%) the teachers behaviors can determine the indiscipline of students in school. If the teachers manage their time well the students will also follow and keep time but if the teachers come on duty late the students also will come late as well. This means that the students imitate the behaviours of their teachers since they are their mentors. The researcher concluded that the methods used in instilling discipline among students of secondary schools such as corporal punishment contribute to indiscipline of students instead of reducing indiscipline. It was also concluded that the parents and teachers behaviors influence the behavours of students in school and hence can make students to be undisciplined if the parents and teachers behaviours are bad. The researcher also concluded that the principals have a big challenge of managing decent teachers and students who are drinking alcohol and taking drugs when they are in school. The principals also have a challenge of staffing their understaffed schools which is also a big determinant of indiscipline in public secondary schools in the district. Hence the frequency of meetings the principals make with their students determine the indiscipline of students in their schools. Therefore communication plays a big role in instilling indiscipline among students in public secondary schools in the study district. Lastly the researcher recommended that in order to assist the principals in instilling discipline in schools, there should be continuous worships and seminars on the effects of drinking alcohol and taking drugs among teachers and students. Seminars and workshops should involve all stakeholders such as the education officers, parents provincial administration, politicians, sponsors, teachers and students. The researcher also recommended for further study in discipline problems facing the poor performance of schools in the learning and teaching process.en_US
