The purpose of this study was to investigate the institutional and pupils' background factors affecting transition from primary school to secondary schools in Limuru district, Kenya. The objectives of the study were to establish the effect of the availability of secondary schools on transition from primary to secondary, determining the extent to which amount of school fees charged affect access to secondary school education and investigate the effects of child labour on transition to secondary schools in Limuru District. In addition, the study determined the extent to which primary school headteachers support learners with learning difficulties, as well as to determine the extent to which supportive school leadership and teachers influence primary school pupils' access to secondary schools in Limuru District. The study used descriptive survey design and the target population comprised of the headtechers in all 39 public primary schools in Limuru District and 1280 Form One students from 18 public secondary schools. The researcher took 50% of the headteachers into account as a good representation of the population which constituted 20 respondents. Sixteen (16%) of the form one students were randomly selected giving a total of 200 students. This study used questionnaires to collect data where each set of questionnaires had two sections. The researcher then conducted a pilot study before the administration of research instrument which enabled the researcher to refine the instrument by making corrections based on the observation made, add new items, delete some items and assess the time taken by the respondent to fill the questionnaire. To establish the reliability of the instrument, the researcher used the test-retest techniques. This involved administering the test to an appropriate group. After some time, the same test was administered to the same group. An authorization to conduct the research was sought from the National council of Science and Technology as well as the consent of the District Commissioner Limuru District to conduct research in Limuru District. The study generated both qualitative and quantitative data. For the quantitative data, analysis of the data was done through descriptive statistics by use of frequencies, percentages and averages while qualitative data was organized into themes corresponding to the study objectives. From the study the researcher revealed that Limuru District does not have enough secondary learning institutions to accommodate all pupils tranSiting to secondary schools and thus reducing the chances of pupils participating in secondary education. The study also revealed that, Children with learning difficuhies are susceptible to more \earning challenges and subsequently may have less chance to access secondary education. The study conclnded that, accessibility of secondary education by pupils is largely influenced by availability of \earning institutions, amount of school fees charged, involvement in child labour and intervention by school administration to support children with learning difficuties.en_US
