dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this study was to find out the factors influencing drop out cases in public primary schools in Kangundo district, Kenya. The specific objectives of the study were; to determine the influence of school factors on the rate of dropout in public primary schools in Kangundo district, to investigate the role the of family background on the rate of primary school dropout in Kangundo district, to examine the effect of HIV Aids on the rate of primary school dropout in Kangundo district; to determine how the cost of education influences the rate of dropout in Kangundo district and to establish how poverty influences the rate of primary school dropout in Kangundo district. The research used the ex post facto design. The number of schools used was thirty one (31). Fifteen (15) class eight pupils were sampled from all the thirty one (31) schools (465) pupil 5 teachers from every school were used and all the 31 headteachers from the participating schools. The study utilized questionnaires and focus group discussions as the research instruments for data collection. Simple random sampling was used to select two teachers per school, giving a total of 40 teachers. The study randomly sampled ten class eight pupils from each school to participate in the study. To get the ten pupils, random sampling was used to select names from class registers. The study utilized questionnaires as the research instruments for data collection. Questionnaires were administered to the pupils, head teachers and teachers. A pilot study was carried out in one pilot school which helped the researcher to evaluate the validity. This study used test-retest during the pilot study to identify any deficiencies so that they could be corrected before the main study. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the quantitative data obtained. The statistics used included frequency counts, means and percentages. The following were the findings of the study: pupils should be guided by teacher and headteachers in order to work. Low achiever drop outs are characterized by their low and often failing grades and their failure to fulfill the minimum required scores to pass the grade. Parents should be encouraged to consult on their pupils' performance. This Family background has often been found to be factor of drop out rates. The factors could be classified as the school related factors such as discipline, curriculum and instruction delivery, school environment, instructional materials, and school policies. Finally, there are the socio-economic factors which include poverty and economic hardship. The following were the recommendation of the study Guidance and counseling should be offered to pupils to encourage them to work hard to curb drop out cases in Kangundo district. Physical facilities should be improved and provided for to suit all pupils going to school. Parents and teachers should work hand in hand to make sure pupils are encouraged to work harder since their parents are fully participating in their performance. Since the introduction of free primary education, parents should be encouraged to enrolltheir children without fear of what they cannot afford especially uniforms. Although poverty level may be higher the parents should be encouraged to educate their children since they will help to eradicate poverty from this district.en_US
