The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of home-based factors on dropout among primary school boys in Dagoretti District of Nairobi Province. Six research questions were formulated to guide the study, among them were, research question- one which sought to establish the effect of the parents socioeconomic factors influencing the dropout of boys in primary schools, research question two which aimed at assessing the effect of parents' educational background on the dropout of boys in primary schools and research question three which sought to establish influence of parents' marital status on dropout of boys in primary schools in Dagoretti District. The study was based on descriptive survey method. Stratified random sampling was used to select 29 headteachers, 29 parents and 29 dropouts. The study used two research instruments; questionnaire for headteachers, interview schedule for the parents and dropouts. Data analysis was done using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The study revealed that social economic background of the parents had an effect on dropout among the boys; that parental educational background contributed to dropout among the boys and that marital status of the parents such as divorce and separation contributed to a high extent on drop out.Based on the findings it was concluded that social economic background of the pupils such as orphanhood, poverty, lack of food at home, contributed to dropout among boys. Parental educational background also contributed to dropout among boys. This was due to the fact that most of the parents had either primary education or Form four which made them uninvolved in their children's education and; they were not able to guide their children hence leading to dropout among boys. The study also revealed that marital status of parents affected dropout among boys. The study also concluded that the health of the family members did not contribute to dropout. The study also concluded that home factors such as lack of good learning climate at home, drug abuse: family instability, bad company at home and peer influence contributed to dropout. The study recommended that there was need to offer guidance and counseling to both parents and teachers on the importance of education; that the school environment should be gender responsive in having more male friendly activities in the curriculum; that there should be provision of more male teachers in schools and that parents should provide a conducive learning environment. The researcher suggested that a study on assessment of the implications of current policies on the education of the boy child should be conducted. It was also suggested that a study on effects of free secondary education on participation of boys in school should be conducted and finally, a study on the effect of teacher demographics on participation of boys in primary schools should be conducted.en_US
