dc.description.abstractThis study was aimed at investigating influence of motivation of teacher on job performance in Kirinyaga Central District. The problem of teacher motivation is global. problem experienced even in Kirinyaga Central District. Kirinyaga Central District has been declining in K.C.S.E exams due to the fact that teachers are not motivated. The study had six objectives; To establish the extent to which teachers characteristics influence teacher motivation, to determine extent to which teachers workload affect teacher motivation, to establish the extent to which TSC terms and condition influence teacher motivation, to examine how provision of teaching and learning facilities affect teacher motivation, to determine contribution of secondary school principals supervision towards teacher motivation and to suggest interventions that may enhance teacher motivation in Kirinyaga Central District. This study used Fredrick Herzberg'S Two Factor Theory. The study employed a descriptive survey design and data collected by use of questionnaires. The target population was 30 public secondary schools, 30 principal's and 362 teachers. Purposive sampling was used to select all schools and principal while simple random sampling was used to select teachers. The sample consisted of 186 teachers, 30 principals and 30 public secondary schools. The study established that there are various factors that may be contributing towards teacher demotivation. These include too .much workload, poor terms of service by Teachers Service Commission, inadequate teaching and learning facilities and poor secondary school administration supervision. The study concluded that teachers had high work load, poor terms and conditions of service provided by TSC. Principals involved teachers in decision making and gave them audience. The study made the following recommendations; minimize teachers workload, improve TSC terms and condition, increase teaching and learning facilities, improvement of schools environment by principals and provide interventions that promote teachers motivation.en_US
