| dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study was to investigate the challenges faced by the BOG in the management of public secondary schools in Uriri District Kenya. The study employed survey design. The target population included all head teachers, all PTA chairpersons and all BOG members in the 18 public secondary schools while the sample comprised of 16 principals, 16 PTA chairpersons and 64 BOG members. Data was collected by use of questionnaires and interview guide. Findings revealed. that The BOG responded that they were not consulted in matters of extending the school term. Findings also revealed that schools lacked the necessary finances to provide the needed facilities.
One of the most noted challenge indicated was inadequate buildings in the schools. Among the challenge faced included poor attitude by the parents, minimum attendance of fund rasing, low income from the community and lack of accountability. Findings also revealed that majority of the PTA rated the BOG as average in financial management. The BOG ensured that the members of the community were invited to school when ever there was an occasion. They also ensured that the community was sensitized on what was going on in the schools. Some of the challenges faced with the community was that the local people did not know their role in the school, said illiteracy was a problem, the local community had negative attitude towards the school, there was no time to involve one in school matters.
It was also revealed that staff and students were motivated in various ways which included giving prizes, educational trips and awarding the hard working students. It was also revealed that the BOG rated themselves as either fair or poor in solving conflict between the non teaching staff and the administration as indicated by 19 (31.7%) and 41 (68.3%) respectively. They however rated themselves as very good in solving conflict between the sponsor and the administration as indicated by 19 (31.7%) and 41 (68.3%) respectively.
The study also concluded that schools lacked the necessary finances to provide the needed facilities. This was as a result of high cost of living, poverty, lack of funds, parental negative attitude and high economic inflation as the major challenges facing the schools in the provision of facilities. The study also concluded that the BOG sourced funds from fund raising, parental contribution, donors and individual contributions. It has also been established that the BOGs faced challenges in financial administration.
The study further concluded that the community was involved when the BOG invited them to the school; they were also involved in raising funds for the schools and in taking part in school activities. They also ensured that the community was sensitized on what was going on in the schools. It was also concluded that the BOG had various ways of motivating the staff and students which included giving prizes, educational trips for students and recommending promotion for teachers. Challenges faced in this area were insufficient funds to cater for such rewards for motivation.
It was also recommended that the BOG and the PTA should be trained in areas of secondary schools management so that they can effectively take part in the running of the schools. Taking the limitations and delimitations of the study, it was suggested that a study on how financial training of the BOG influence their management of public secondary school should be conducted. A study on economic factors and their influence in financial management of school finances and another study on the influence of BOG characteristics such as age, level of education and gender on the performance of school management roles should be conducted. | en_US |
