The study was about the responses by the Universirv of Nairobi to changing environmental conditions. Its objective was to document the University of Nairobi's responses to the environmental changes. Data collection for this study was carried out using a questionnaire. Information collected was analysed using content analysis. From the findings, the University of Nairobi has a student population ranging from 500 to 1200 per the units or departments. On the external changes and challenges facing the university, some of the changes have stirred the university to awake while others have been harsh. The university is greatly affected by the increase in competition from other institutions especially with the introduction of the module II programme and thus the institutions are competing for teaching staff and space and students. Responses to the changes have been by unit basis and others by university as a whole. Findings indicate that the university's response has been greatly hampered by the slowness of the management. The university has not adequately responded to the changes and the challenges it is facing from the external environment because there are some internal weaknesses affecting the university. In order to achieve the objectives and be able to measure their performance, the university has put in place some measures to address the challenges and the changes. In conclusion, the study was able to find that the university has been trying to respond to these changes and challenges by coming up with several measuresen
