| dc.description.abstract | This research project report was set to examine the factors that influence students' discipline despite the government effort to invest in education of the youth. Discipline plays the role of creating a safe and conducive learning environment. Studies show that the level of discipline in Kenyan secondary school is very low. From 1991, Kenya has witnessed gross indiscipline including burning of schools, strikes and use of drugs. These problems threaten the physical well being of students and affect the acquisition of academic skills. Cases of indiscipline among students in schools have led to drop in performance in K.C.S.E exam last year. This is so since character and education must go hand in hand.
This study has a main objective to determine the factors influencing discipline among students in Mathira East District. The research reviewed related literature according to the following Subtopics; the concept of discipline, influence of drug abuse, home environment, school environment and other factors that influence discipline. The study adopted descriptive survey design. Stratified random sampling and purposive sampling were used to select the sample size from the target population. Data was collected using questionnaires for students, guidance and counseling teachers, deputy principals and interview schedules for principals. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics.
The main finding of this study was that discipline among student in Mathira East District was low. This was highly related to drug abuse, role models, home environment and school environment. The study recommends that a similar study be carried in other districts and also in private schools for comparison purposes. It also recommends that further studies be carried out on drug abuse in schools. The study will be useful to the policy makers in education, principals, teachers, students, parents and the community at large in their effort to enhance discipline among the youth. The study will assist the Ministry of Education as it will suggest measures to improve on the existing discipline policies. | en_US |
