A review of laboratory records of patients with acute gastroenteritis showed that from 1975 to 1979 the commonest pathogens isolated from stool specimens were shigellae (14% of samples examined), salmonellae (8%) and enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (5%). It is apparent that techniques were not used routinely to identify other bacterial causes of gastrointestinal disease. Paul R. Gully.en
