dc.description.abstractThe aim of this study was to assess the impact of t he HIV and AIDS epidemic on the port of Durban and to recommend sustainable policies and programs for dealing more effectively with the epidemic. Evidence showed that many companies operating withi n Durban port recognize the inextricable link between HIV/AIDS, declining productivity, rising pr oduction costs and declining profits, and that earl y investments in education and prevention campaigns, can considerably reduce the spread of HIV among workers, their families and local communities. Many companies studied in the port of Durban have an HIV/AIDS policy, provide HIV prevention education, care and support and are implementing fair employment practicesen
