| dc.description.abstract | Education is recognized to have good returns, be it private or social. Investment in education has never gone to waste. Challenges facing educational achievement have been viewed differently by different scholars. Issues on performance by students have dominated educational provisions worldwide due to the resources that are invested in education. There is an existing notion that clean, quiet, safe, comfortable, and healthy environments are an important component of successful teaching and learning in the institutions. A good school facility supports the educational enterprise. While factors such as student socioeconomic status and parental involvement are among the most important predictors of students' academic performance.
A well managed and well maintained learning institution enhances the students' achievement. Some of these characteristics of the educational facilities affect the students' concentration in his/her school work and therefore contribute to high or low academic achievement levels in different schools. The purpose of the study was to establish the influence of educational facilities in academic performance in primary schools in Kisumu Municipality. The study was guided by the following research objectives which sought to explore how; instructional materials, buildings and physical environment, qualifications of teaching staff and extra-curricular activities as aspects of educational facilities influence performance of primary schools in Kisumu Municipality. It also explored strategies that may be used to improve performance of primary schools in Kisumu Municipality.
The study adopted descriptive design for the purpose of assessing the study's general intent and questionnaires were used to collect the quantitative data. A random sample of 117 primary schools head teachers and 375 teachers was selected was selected to represent the target population. The sampling technique involved school selection based on population proportional to size (PPS). Nine educational zones in Kisumu Municipality were selected purposively for data collection for a period of three weeks. Data collected for the study was reviewed and cleaned at collection points and every evening entered into an MS data Access base to minimize errors of omission and commission. Data was analyzed by use SPSS for quantitative while qualitative data was built on the key thematic areas which was discussed to complement the quantitative data. In conclusion the study findings revealed that quality of educational facilities influence performance of primary schools in Kisumu Municipality.
The study recommends M.O.E.to only licenses the registration of new schools with full enrolment, ensure school's implementation of curriculum based establishment (CBE) of 40 pupils per class three streams per school, amalgamate small schools, introduce sharing libraries, computer rooms, etc. in neighboring schools. Head teachers should ensure that washrooms (toilets) are in adequate proportion compared to the number of pupils in a school and they should be clean and well maintained. QASOs should ensure there is enough water supply at 50 pupils per water point. The government should revise the legal document governing the conditions of buildings and physical environment. Further research is suggested to investigate the extent, to which the provision of school infrastructure development fund has promoted access and performance in primary education, to evaluate the implementation of non formal curriculum in primary schools and the study may be replicated in a rural set-up since Kisumu Municipality is in urban set-up. | en_US |
