The general objective of this study was to find out the roles of heads of departments in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education performance in Limuru district Kiambu County. The study was guided by the following objectives; To establish the supervisory methods employed by heads of departments to enhance performance in KCSE in public secondary schools in Limuru district, to determine if the supervisory methods are effective to improve KCSE performance in public secondary schools in Limuru district, to determine the challenges experienced by heads of departments in ensuring good performance in KCSE in public secondary schools and to provide suggestions that will help heads of departments in ensuring good performance in KCSE in public secondary schools. The study employed a descriptive survey method where variables were investigated without any manipulation or alteration and descriptive methodologies were used in exploring the inter-relationships between the variables. The target population was 27 headteachers, 91 academic heads of departments and 250 teachers. The sample size consisted of 8 headteachers, 27 heads of department and 75 teachers. Structured questionnaires were used in the collection of data. Data was edited, coded, and then analyzed by Statistical Package for Social Scientists using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages and presented in tables and bar graphs. The study underscored the need for HODs to undergo proper induction. It further established that unless HODs are fully empowered they would not be able to improve school performance significantly. In addition the study shows that there is no clear job description for HODs and so the curriculum developers ought to be clear with the duties of the HODs. Hence there is a clear relationship between good performance and well prepared, motivated and organized HODs. Lack of facilities is an impediment in the performance of heads of departments. The heads of departments need to be provided with the required teaching aids and other relevant facilities. It is clear that here is no clear job description and so the curriculum developers ought to be clear with the duties of the HODs. The officers from the education ministry should be serious with checking the schools to ensure quality assurance is adhered to. The overload of work. is evident and so the TSC should employ more teachers to ease the pressure since it is 1mlrd for them to cater for all the students thus leading to poor performance. The researcher recommendation is that the ministry officers entrusted with ensuring quality assurance and standards should provide regular interactive and advisory interactions and should not be judgmental. The headteachers should provide the HODs with a well defined job description of their duties to avoid confusion in discharging their duties.en_US
