dc.description.abstractThe purpose of the study was to investigate factors influencing career choice of girls in public secondary schools in Migori County. The statement of the problem was to unearth the girls into making informed choices on career. The study was guided specifically by the following objectives: the attitude of girls towards non-traditional career choice, the extent to which curriculum implementation influence careers choice among girls, the influence of role modeling and influence of career counseling in secondary schools in Migori County. The significance of this study was to expose the girls to diverse careers in formal economy. The study was limited by rough geographical terrain and vastness of the county, which forced the researcher to use 'bodaboda' on the rough roads so as to reach schools that are interior. The study was delimited by being confined in Migori County as the County provided cultural dimension as well as variety in terms of social context that can influence career choice. Literature was reviewed in the following sub headings; attitude of girls towards nontraditional career, influence of curriculum implementation on career choice, influence of role models on career choice, and influence of career counseling on girls' career choice. The study adopted the relevant theoretical framework and the conceptual framework which showed how the researcher was guided by the indicated variables. The study therefore adopted descriptive survey targeting a population of 1200form four girls in Migori County. The sample selected was291 respondents, which was done through simple random sampling technique. The data collection tools were questionnaire administered to Form 4 students and interview guide administered to principals and career teachers respectively in the sampled schools. The interview guide was used to beef up the information in the questionnaire. The questionnaires used were close ended and open-ended. The data collected was analyzed and presented in tables in the form of frequencies and percentages. The study concluded that many female career choices are influenced by their attitude and perception into believing that some careers are for females while others are for males .Girls have internalized negative belief about themselves, they perceive themselves as unequal and inferior to boys. Similarly, that curriculum implementation influence career choice among girls. Curriculum has remained gender biased, as some subjects are still considered feminine and masculine respectively. Additionally, that role models are increasingly important for determining career choice as they provide vicarious learning experiences that increase the likelihood of choosing a specific career. It was concluded that students make choices based on poor career choice due to lack of comprehensive career guidance programmes. The study finally recommended that the gendered image of non-traditional careers be redefined through measures that directly change manifest appearance of the gender such as providing role models. The study recommended committed long-term approach in reducing stereotypical curriculum preferences and tackling stereotypical attitudes and behaviors. There's need to alter the masculine image of science and change the content to overcome gender bias schemes in science textbooks. The study recommended that positive role models in SMT be an important component of career guidance. The study recommended the need for formulating interventions geared towards revamping career guidance programmes in secondary schools. There is need to educate career counselors about relevant gender issues on career choice. The study finally suggested possible areas of future research based on findings. A similar study be done for boys to establish whether there are similarities or Among variables of career choice.en_US
