On January 6th 2003, the Kenyan children started the day with vigor and hope. Primary education was free and all that was required was for every child regardless of age to walk to a nearby school next to where they lived. Despite the introduction of free primary education (FPE) so as to offer opportunities to many children, there are increasing concerns regarding the quality of education received by the learners. The purpose of this study was to establish and describe the influence of free primary education and performance in the KCPE in Chemundu Zone in Nandi County. The study was a cross sectional survey in which both quantitative and qualitative data was collected. The dependent and independent variables are FPE and performance respectively in KCPE. Purposive sampling technique was used to pick 30% of the total population. The data collection instruments were questionnaires, interview schedules and documentary analysis. The data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study revealed that free primary education has led to an increased in enrollment. The resources therefore need to subsequently be increased. The study recommends that infrastructural facilities and teachers be increased so as to match the changes in increased enrollment and a similar study be replicated in other l?arts of the country.en
