| dc.description.abstract | Issues of indiscipline among students in public secondary schools seem to be rampant in Rachuonyo district. Indiscipline among students seem to emanate from some relationship that some students have with the support staff. The study was a descriptive survey seeking to find the relationship between the role of the support-staff at work and the discipline of the students. The purpose of the study was to investigate the role of support staff on student' discipline in public secondary schools in Kasipul division, Rachuonyo district. The objectives of the study were to identify the behavioral habits of the support staff that can influence discipline in students, to examine challenges that headteachers face when dealing with discipline issues and to seek solutions to the discipline problems.
The research study was carried out in 16 public secondary schools of Kasipul division of Rachuonyo South District in Nyanza province. Stratified sampling technique was used to sample the schools based on boys only, girls only and mixed day and boarding. Questionnaires were used for students and interview schedule for the support staff and head teachers where content validity was tested to bring out the accuracy and meaningfulness of the research result.
Qualitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics by coding and counting to facilitate easy tabulation. The key findings as per the research questions of the study found out that there prevails a substantial positive relationship between the students and the support staff. The study however discovered minimal influence of support staff on student discipline. Conclusions made from the study revealed that there prevails a substantial positive relationship between the students and the support staff. The study also concluded that good relationship between the students and the support staff should be encouraged for positive behaviour adjustment.
The key recommendations of the study emphasized on guidance and counseling being an effective tool of controlling discipline should be emphasized in schools to help learners to make a meaningful transition from one stage of life to another with ease. Recreational activities like concerts, games, music, drama and suitable film shows promote good discipline and should be emphasized in secondary schools. In addition, safety values should be provided to cater for stresses and strains that arise amongst students. This involves providing a weekly forum in which student express their opinions on school life. | en_US |
