Factors influencing the implementation of strengthening maths and science in secondary schools (SMASSE) project in Garissa municipality
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the factors that influence the implementation of strengthening of math and sciences (SMASSE) project in Secondary Schools in Garissa Municipality. Since the inception of SMASSE the implementation pace was that of a Snail pace this is very much alarming to all Education Stakeholders. The Government of Kenya put in place strategies of planning, designing and implementation measures. Despite that, the effect of the project on the target group bas not been realized including Garissa municipality. The researcher among the factors considers; the effects of caching Resources, Facilities, methodology, Curriculum Delivery and Attitude of the learners among other- factors as objectives of the study.
The research design employed in this kind of study is evaluation study. The target populations of the study were students and teachers of selected secondaIy schools located in Garissa municipality. From the findings lesson notes have been rated the best professional record in the curriculum delivery. Most of the respondents who responded agree that inadequacy of teaching resources influences the implementation of SMASSE in Garissa municipality 120 of the respondents which translates to 66.6%.
Discussions seemed not to be enjoyed by students from all categories- of schools ranging from national to private schools. Similar response was depicted when students were classified as coming from SMASSE centers, Actualization centers and Participant schools. More effort needs to be directed towards making sciences enjoyable by students. Some elements of sciences being difficult were likely to be lingering in the students' minds.
Most of the respondents preferred the llSC of demonstration method as the best teaching methodology. The researcher made the following recommendations;
Promotion of favourab1e attitudes towards sciences, improving the teaching and learning resources in schools, Proper evaluation techniques to evaluate the curriculum delivery. Improving the teaching and learning facilities in schools and employing more teachers to enhance the human resources in schools.
