dc.description.abstractTeachers' performance is the most variable in increasing students' achievement. In this . research project, the researcher looked at teachers' performance considering infrastructure, proximity to place of work and teaching and learning resources. It is generally accepted that the competence and commitment of teachers should be the most important determinant of learning outcomes .. Wbat is striking. though is just how little systematic research has been undertaken on factors influencing teachers' performance among teachers in public secondary schools: The study. aimed at establishing factors determining teachers' performance in public secondary schools in Nyakach District. The study,' was guided by the following objectives: to establish the extent to which infrastructure determines teachers' performance in public secondary schools in Nyakach District, to examine how proximity to place of work determines teachers' performance in public schools in Nyakach District, to investigate the extent to which teachingllearning tesources determine teachers' performance in public secondary schools in Nyakach District. The study sought answers to the following research questions; to what extent does infrastructure determine teachers' performance/in public secondary schools in Nyakach? How does proximity to work place determine teachers' performance in public schools in Nyakach District? To what extent do teaching and learning resources determine teachers' performance in public schools in Nyakach District? . Descriptive research design was adopted for the study. Stratified sampling design was used in the selection. of the respondents. Purposive sampling techniques were used to sample Principals and also the DQASO. The target population of the study was 440 teachers, 39 principals and 1 District Quality Assurance and Standards Officer. A total of 242 respondents were sampled. for the study. Questionnaires were used to collect data from 205 teachers of which 176 questionnaires were returned. The interview schedules were used to collect data from the DQASO and the 36 Principals of which 34 were successfully interviewed. All the completed data Were edited. and coded . to eliminate any errors thai. were made by the l'eSponqellts. The. Statistical Package for Social . Sciences (SPSS) was used to compute the . analyZed data .Descriptive 'Statistics such as frequencies and percentages were used to describe the data using tables. The study foundgeed.classrooms have a positive influence on teachers' performance as indicated by 96.6% of the respondents. It was also found that the presence of a laboratory influences teachers' performance and this was indicated by 98.3% of the respondents; The study further found that proximity to work place influences teachers' performance and this was indicated by 92.6%.of the respondents. The study also found that teaching and learning resources is inadequate in most public secondary schools in Nyakach District this-was indicated by 65.3% of the respondents. The study found that 50% of the respondents rarely used lesson plans. From the fmdings of the study it was concluded that infrastructure influences teachers' performance as it was indicated by! 92.6% of the respondents. The study also concluded that proximity to work place influences teachers' performance and this was indicated by 92% of the respondents. Learning I teaching resources influence teachers' performance as indicated by 65.3% of the respondents. The study also concluded that majority of Principals are in-experienced the DQASO inclusive. The recommendations of the study are as follows; infrastructure be improved in public secondary schools, teachers' houses built in public 'secondary schools, teaching/learning resources be made adequate and the inexperienced Principals should work towards a benchmark. Areas for further studies include; a similar research to be done in other districts in Kenya, a further research be done on a comparative analysis between relative good performance and poor performance in terms of the issues raised in the study.en_US
