dc.description.abstractThe main purpose of this study was to assess the role of international development agencies on the empowerment of local community organizations in Kenya. This is a case study of CARE international in Kenya, an international non governmental organization that works to alleviate poverty and enhance social justice to poor, vulnerable and marginalized populations. The study was guided by four major objectives, which was seeking to find the role of capacity building, funding,networking,partnership and resource mobilization on the empowerment of local partner organizations. this was seen through the organization s governance systems program development, financial management, human resource management and organizational sustainability. The literature review points out that the role and influence of development agencies in relation to community empowerment. it points out that capacity building provision of funding,networking,partnership and resource mobilization roles that these development agencies provide to local NGOs and CBOs are inconstably important to these organizations in community development. they ensure the growth of the organizations in terms of their internal systems and structures which ultimately leads to their sustainability. The study utilized questionnaires and key informant interview guides as the main tools of data collection they contained both close and open ended questions.the target population was composed of program staff.chief executive officers/program directors of these local partner organizations as well as the human resource managers,finance staff and board of governors. The sample size was made up of 100 persons from 20 local partner organizations. These constitute of five staff from each of the 20 local partner organizations. The data was entered and analyzed by simple descriptive analysis using percentages in SPSS followed by cross-tabulations and testing significant differences by the Chi-square test of independence at 0.05 significance level because of the categorical nature of variables under study. Findings were presented in tables preceded by explanations. From the findings of this study, it was established that capacity building, networking and partnerships, and resource mobilization play a key role in empowering the society and should be focused on individual needs of the organization. it is therefore recommended that funding of local partner organizations should be geared towards sustainability of an organization. the effect development organizations pose when they work with the community as compared to when they work through community based partner organizations should be further assessed as area of study.en_US
