dc.description.abstractKenya is one of the countries in Africa practicing dairy farming under the Ministry of Livestock Development· in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture. Kenya has fertile soils and adequate rainfall with many communities relying on livestock products. However despite its production capacity in milk production, a great percentage of Kenya's population, of the estimated 40 million people live on malnutrition and poverty which has become evident that the dairy farming at present gives low milk service for self sufficiency. This as made dairy farmers in Ekerenyo Division to form self help groups in order to work as a team so that they can improve dairy farming project. The purpose of this study, is to determine the methods of distribution of dairy cows, milk production, management of dairy farming and Dairy waste on the livelihoods of self help group members in Ekerenyo Division, Nyamira County. In chapter two 0 fthe study comprises the literature review related to thedairy farming. Research methodology applied lies in chapter three of this project report. Data analysis, presentation, interpretation and discussion is in chapter four while chapter five comprises summary of findings, conclusion and recommendations. A descriptive survey design, Lovel (1977) was appropriate to be used as it notes the perspective of self help groups. A sample size 12 self help groups with an average members of 55 was spread in the sub locations. Data for the study was collected using questionaaires and interview schedules. The study recommend that the government to make concerted efforts to mobilize the community to improve literacy by taking advantage in Free Primary Education and Secondary Education and other informal training, that the Ministry of Livestock to introduce saving and credit organizations and soft loans to enable dairy self help groups to improve their dairy projects. The study also recommends that the Ministry of Livestock use local administration and other partners to introduce new exotic dairy breeds in Ekerenyo Division, Nyamira County. Through this new breeds, with high milk production will double the impact on milk. In the dairy waste management the study recommends that self-help groups to make use of it by converting the gas emission in production of biogas which will be used in the household activities.en_US
