dc.description.abstract | The aim of this research was to investigate the influence of effective instructional supervision carried out by head teachers in public primary schools in relation to school performance in Central Division, Garissa District. The overall objective is to investigate whether head teachers in public primary schools in Garissa central district perform the function of staffing, motivation of teachers, consultation of teachers, programme development and evaluation of teachers.
Besides that the study sought to determine the influence of effective instructional supervisory functions of head teachers on school performance, to establish whether the professional qualification 0 school head teachers in public primary schools influence the level of instructional supervisory functions and school performance, to determine the influence of positive interpersonal relationship on the enhancement of school performance.
The research design employed was the use of descriptive survey design. The target population was 31 primary head teachers, two quality and standards assurance officers from the local education office and 47 primary teachers from the 31 public primary schools in central division of Garissa From the findings it clearly came out that 78% of the head teachers did not perform the supervisory functions that was entrusted on them by the authorities that represent. Staffing function, motivation, consultation, programme development and evaluation functions were not properly done by the head teachers. The study found out that some of head teachers were not well versed with their roles in school since they lacked basic skills in running the school.
The researcher made the following recommendations; the ministry should broaden the frequency of in-service trainings for the head teachers, address the logistical challenges faced by QASO's, lessen functions of head teachers in schools and appointment of head teachers be based on qualifications. Further research should be stepped up in filling the gap on the effects of the head teachers functions on academic performance of public primary schools, research also be carried out in all public schools in the country to assess the head teachers level of performance on the instructional supervisory function in primary schools. | en_US |
