| dc.description.abstract | The purpose of this study investigated determinants of growth of small scale fish enterprise. This study was designed to fulfill four objectives. To asses the extent to which demographic characteristics influences growth of small scale fish enterprises, to investigate how government policy influences growth of small scale fish enterprises, to assess the level at which the nature of economic activity of small scale fish enterprise influences growth of small scale fish enterprise and to examine the extent to which training in business management influences growth of small fish enterprise.
The statement of the problem was to unearth small scale enterprises in making correct choices in the activities accelerating growth in small scale fish enterprise. The limitations of the study included difficulty in accessibility since roads are not tarmac; it has attracted settlers from far and wide and is the majority who are believed to participate in small scale fish enterprise. The study was delimited by being confined in the area of Nyang'oma division, which was more accessible and convenient to this study as it also brought together various types of businesses within that area. Literature was reviewed on themes and their sub-themes.
The study adopted the relevant theoretical frame work and the conceptual framework which showed how the researcher was guided by the indicated variables. The study therefore adopted descriptive survey targeting a population of 1825 small scale fish enterprises in Nyang'oma division. The sample selected were 322 respondents which were done through probability sampling technique. The study used structured questionnaires, as main tool of data collections. The data was analyzed using percentages and means which were presented in tables then were discussed as per the findings in literature review in chapter two.
The study found that there were more female entrepreneurs recording growth in their business compared to male counterparts. Entrepreneurs who were married and between age group of 30-39 years were also found to experience growth in their business. The study concluded that there were more women engaged in the enterprise than men; married people engaged their families' hence low employee. The study finally recommended that those engaged in small scale fish enterprises needed to be trained in small enterprise for proper management which was to expose them to more possible ways of managing their small scale fish enterprises.
The study also recommended that there is need for government policy to be made according to regulatory measures to suit SSFE through the involvement of stakeholders at all levels also since SEs is the key economic sector, they lack resources of funds and this may be done through asking government to allocate sufficient financial support to SSFE. The study also suggested possible areas of future use based on findings. That further research to be done on effects of taxation system in relation to fluctuation of markets in SSFE as well as influence of modem technology on growth of small scale fish enterprise. | en_US |
