The purpose of this project report is to deve Lcp teaching materials for BASIC, for the undergraduate computing courses offered at the Institute of Computer Science on the ICL 2950 computer. The material has been laid out in conjunction with the reference manual on BASIC. It contains more examples with a better power of understanding. Computer Science can be divided into two great streams of knowledge: one is programming and the other deals with principles, construction and applications of computer systems. This repor+ is centred on the first stream and in particular the BASIC language. It is organized into two parts; Chapters 1 and 2. The first dhapter is an introduction to computers. It enables one to urrlerstand the basics of a computer system and how it works. This is followed by an introduction to programming languages. Here, a brief outline of the different languages is given together with a guide to structured flowdharting. The second dhapter deals with the BASIC language. It contains the necessary statements, commands and instructions to enable one to program efficiently. The material for this report was obtained from the academic staff of the Institute of Computer Science and from various references listed in the Apperdix. The Apperdix also includes the project proposal together with a report on suggestions from the undergraduate students.en
