dc.description.abstract | Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have played a tremendous role in addressing the issues
of poverty, equality and development. The decentralization of governments and scaling-back of
social spending advocated by the international financial institutions and large aid-donor
organizations throughout the last decades have created considerable spaces for NGOs and made
them key figures in a wide range of social sectors (Odera and Miruka 2007). Consequently,
NGOs playa critical role in all areas of development thus their success or failure directly impact
the success or failure of development initiatives and a peoples standard of living in any given
area. (Dhillon and Hansra 1995). Besides, based on their sizes, operating structure, and
connections to the community they serve, most local NGOs are in a better position than
government bureaucracies to respond quickly to identified needs and opportunities at the
community level. These characteristics also allow NGOs to respond flexibly to the complex and
rapidly evolving pandemic, make mid-course adjustments as necessary, and tailor existing
programsto local realities (M. Edwards and J. Gaventa, 2001). A good example of this impact of
NGO funded project is Msambweni District, Kwale County where almost 85% of the residents
live below poverty level and rely heavily on the NGO funded projects for their sustenance and
development. This made the area a good study location for any study that looks into the
determinants of implementation of the NGO funded projects. However, it has been noted that
some non- governmental funded projects do not meet their intended objectives as they soon or
later collapse leaving the people desperately in need. The purpose of the study was thus to assess
the determinants of implementation of Non -Governmental funded projects in Msambweni
District Kwale County. The study applied a descriptive survey model in order to clearly establish
the relationships between the factors identified in the literature review and the implementation of
the NGO funded projects. Data was collected using questionnaires, observation and interviews
before coding and sorting and testing for validity and reliability. The study found out that the
implementation ofNGO funded projects is influenced by Donor partnerships, Community roles,
Competence of project team and Government support. The study found out that the projects run
by Camp International are successful. However much of this success is attributed to the
competence of the project team and government support with community roles and donor
relation lowering the level of success. From these findings the recommendations have been made
in the report. The fmdings was presented in tables graphs and charts and availed in Library for
use by scholars and other stakeholders of the NGO funded projects. | en_US |
