| dc.description.abstract | Globally, forests cover about four billion hectares. Kenya forest cover is about 1.7% of the total land area which is far much below the internationally recommended 10% per country. More than 1.6 billion people globally depend on forests for their livelihood. In the past, solving of forest issues was unsuccessful due to the fact that universal approach was used whereas situations differ. The objectives of this study are to determine socioeconomic factors affecting conservation and management of Donduri forest, asses the current forest conservation activities, assess adoption of Agroforestry practices by the community adjacent to the forest and asses current forest management practiced in Donduri forest.
A descriptive research design was used. Multi- stage and purposive sampling was used in the study and the sample size was 200 respondents, Data was collected using questionnaire, interview and focus group discussion. Data was analyzed using descriptive analysis and inferential statistical technique by the help of statistical package for social sciences. The results were that gender and age had no relationship with effective conservation and management of the forest, membership to conservation group, extension service, household size adoption of agroforestry had positive relationship. education, income and land size had negative relationship. Planting indigenous trees is . very low, and the stakeholders are not adequately involved in forest management.
The study concluded that membership to conservation group, adoption of agroforestry and current management practices had the greatest influence. Efforts should thus be focused on those factors that influence effective conservation and management of the forest. The study is significant since Donduri forest is an important water catchment area and supports livelihoods of the adjacent community. The study will also enable sound decision making in formulation of relevant management programmes by the stakeholders. | en_US |
