This study is to assess the role of social development office participation in successful completion of women group's projects in Makandara District by use of primary data. Women have the greatest role in their homes and many of them have come together in organized groups to do projects and uplift their homes and living standards. The Governments through the relevant ministries have done capacity building and training in functional areas such as finance, literacy skills, marketing, production and managerial skills such as management of women groups' projects. These groups help raise the standard of living of the members as they act as conduits through which the government agencies root credit to the community and also role of the DSDO in identification, planning, implementation monitoring and evaluation of women groups' projects leading to the successful completion of the projects. However, some projects continue to fail to achieve the desired group objectives casting questions on the level of management by the DSDO on these women groups projects and their willingness and ability to implement the guidelines of the social development office Government of Kenya. This study had the following objectives; to assess the role of social development office participation in project identification, planning, implementation and monitoring of women groups projects on successful completion. The researcher undertook this research so that she may be able to propose the possible remedies to the role of DSDO on the successful completion of women groups' projects in Makadara district. The researcher targeted a population of a hundred projects from the district which has a total of 520 members. The researcher used a proportionate sample of twenty five percent to get the number of respondents to interview from each project leading to a total of 130 respondents. 100 questionnaires were returned for analysis. The data collected was analyzed by use of statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) and presented by use of frequency distribution tables, percentages and Chi square. The results of the study showed that majority of projects are in business and education sectors. That, the majority of the groups projects had officials obtained through an election and a few on appointment. The study further shows that the groups are registered by the DSDO after they have enough members who come up with a constitution and elect an executive. The study showed that project members playa role in identification, planning, implementation and monitoring of the projects. Majority of members agreed that most of the projects have solved communities' problems and have/will meet their project objectives. The study further showed that the women groups projects were successful and there was considerable participation by the DSDO. They attributed this success of women groups projects to proper identification, planning, implementation and monitoring of projects by the DSDO. The study findings will be used in policy formulation to empower women through encouraging them to seek for technical advice when they engage in projects management. The study proposes further research on the role of the women groups' members in successful completion of project in Makandara and the role of education of executive in successful implementation. Findings obtained in this study, can be used in policy formulation of women empowerment policies and improvement of the DSDO participation in the management of women group projects in the country.en_US
