| dc.description.abstract | The research paper is about factors influencing implementation of Business continuity Plan, The case of Mombasa Polytechnic University College. The purpose of the study was to determine the internal and external factors that contribute to successful implementation of Business Continuity Plan the case of MPUC. Today when people think of disasters that could disrupt their lives, they think of natural disasters such as tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, and earthquakes. However, a disaster is not limited to natural types.
In fact, a business disaster is any unplanned, extended loss of critical business applications due to lack of computer processing capabilities for more than a 48-hour period. Most organizations concentrate more on disaster avoidance compared to disaster recovery planning. Business continuity Plan is a clearly defined and documented operation plan that guides organizations to reduce, respond, recover, resume, restore and return to full recovery. Typically it covers key personnel, resources, services and actions required to ensure critical business functions can continue within planned levels of disruption.
The organisational structure and IT infrastructure of small to medium sized organisations usually differ a lot from those of large organisations. For this reason one can argue that the BCP methodologies utilised in large organisations (over 500 staffs) might not be ideal for implementation in smaller organisations (>500 staffs). One could further argue that the difference in BCP methodologies, addressing smaller companies, would be mostly implementation based. For that reason an implementation method for BCP methodologies that will ensure simple implementation would prove useful.
This study is relevant because large and complex organizations have utilized various factors and the successful implementation of these BCP programs depends on effective management of these variables. This research is based on two different questionnaire surveys: one targeted IT experts: survey 2A in the administrations and another targeted IT Personnel (technicians): survey 2B in different departments in MPUC.A total of 35 respondents of this study were sampled by carrying out interviews with IT Experts (15 respondents) and IT Personnel (20 respondents) both at administrations and departmental level.
The 15 IT experts were selected purposively from the administrations in the MPUC. Most of them are involved in the following areas: IT technical support, IT systems analyst, IT system administration, IT planning, Web server management, datal storage administration and IT consultation. The target people in the second questionnaire survey 2B were selected randomly from different departments conducting different IT businesses. The study employed a survey design incorporating descriptive research.
The data, which is quantitative in nature, was analysed using SPSS to generate chi-square statistics, giving chi square values as is illustrated in the analysis. The outcome of the analysis were interpreted and presented using frequencies and tables. The paper advocates the need of a design plan strategy for implementation of BCP in institution imparting higher education. This study concludes that the factors influencing successful implementation of Business Continuity Plan the case for MPUC, include organization management, top management support, the IT Vendors, IT Customers, IT network Infrastructure.
These factors have a significant influence on successful implementation of BCP, in MPUC, Mombasa, Kenya. The study may thus assist decision makers in coming up with remedial measures to improve the implementation of on-going BCP programs, and also in the designs of future BCP programs. | en_US |
