The study intends to investigate the Management styles used by the organization and to determine how it has affected the organizational performance, a case of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Nairobi. The objective of the study was to determine the management style used by the organization. According to Mintzberg (1990), recognizes that management and leadership are two different sides which are both required for better performance of the organization. The presentation of the data has shown that most of the respondents were male while the female were few. In the circumstances the age bracket comprised of ages 20 above 51 years of age. The respondents comprised of deans, principals, chairperson, supervisors, middle level and lower level management comprised of associate deans and supervisors and the middle level management. The report has clearly indicated that the respondents were master's level and PhD holders. The terms of employment was permanent with the highest percentage while those on contract were few and those in temporary terms. The data presentation has revealed that the management style used by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) is satisfactory while a few said they were dissatisfied. The respondents also showed a lot of positive feeling about the mode of communication at the college level as well as departmental level. Performance considers how well managers seek to understand and appreciate others' values; and not merely as a means to a business goal but in terms of delegation, or how well management gives assignments and communicates instructions to members of the organization. Another measure is execution, or how well management's plans are carried out by members of the organization as well as Leadership, or how effectively management communicates and translates the vision and strategy of the organization to the members. The results have shown that the majority of the respondents agreed that successful employee management and leadership promotes employee engagement, employee motivation, employee development and employee retention. The respondents were somewhat satisfied with the management style of the institution though a few were very satisfied with the management style of the institution and others were somewhat dissatisfied with the management style of the institution. The study further recommends that in order for the University of Nairobi, College of Humanities and Social Sciences to increase its organizational performance, there is need to develop proper leadership and management styles. The management style was good as per the results but still others termed it as being unfair and a few were quite undecided of the type of management style in relation to employee performance. There is therefore need to study on the challenges that the college faces on management style and to get an in-depth study of the feelings of the staff.en_US
