dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this study was to ascertain the influence of Child Abuse on the academic performance of children with hearing impairment in Mutomo primary school in Kitui District. It sought to investigate the influence of Child Abuse on the deaf children's academic perfomance. The main objectives sought to establish the extent to which physical abuse influenced the academic performance among deaf children; to determine the extent to which sexual abuse influences the academic performance among the deaf children; to establish the extent to which emotional abuse influenced the academic performance among deaf children; and to establish the extent to which neglect influenced academic performance among deaf children. The project adopted a survey study methodology which hypothesised that child abuse significantly influenced the academic performance of children in the Mutomo Primary School for the deaf and required collection of primary data and secondary data using instruments that included questionnaires, observations and oral interviews, published and unpublished information sources. In this study,questionnaires and key Informant Interview guides were used as the main tools of data collection. The target population was composed of deaf children,teachers of deaf chldren,parents of the deaf children,ministry of Education officials and local administrators. The sample size comprised 66 persons from Mutomo division. Data collected from the field was entered and analyzed by simple descriptive analysis using percentages in SPSS and crosstabulation. Findings of the study analysis were presented in tables. From the findings of this study, it was established that Child abuse negatively influenced academic perfromance of deaf children in Mutomo division. Physical and Sexual forms of abuse did not have any relationship with poor academic performance of deaf children,however Child neglect and Emotional abuses high;y contributed towards poor academic performance of deaf children in Mutomo school for the deaf. It is therefore recommended that parents of the deaf children and the community in Mutomo should be taught sign language and sensitationon the deaf child's rights must be done,this will ensure that the community appreciates the deaf child thus eleminate neglect and emotional abuses among the deaf children.en_US
