dc.description.abstractThe primary purpose of this study is to determine factors influencing job satisfaction of secondary school principals and teachers in Nakuru North district in Nakuru county. The study sought to determine the influence of achievement of organizational goals on secondary school teachers job satisfaction, to establish extent to which promotion prospects influence job satisfaction among secondary school teachers, to establish the extent to which challenging tasks influence job satisfaction among secondary school teachers, to establish how challenging tasks influence job satisfaction among secondary school teachers. The study finally sought to determine the extent to which work environment influence job satisfaction among secondary school teachers in Nakuru North environment. This study employed a descriptive survey design. The target population comprised of 30 headteachers and 384 teachers. Data were collected by 2 type questionnaires which were sampled and distributed to 30 headteachers and 115 teachers. The questionnaire was divided into two parts, A and B. Part A dealt with background information of headteachers and teachers. Part B sought to establish the factors influencing job satisfaction among secondary school teachers in Nakuru North district. The data was presented using descriptive statistics in the form of frequencies and percentages. Findings of the study showed that majority of the headteachers (97%) indicated that their teachers were satisfied with the headteachers supervisory support. This shows that teachers were satisfied with organization goals achievement. On promotion prospects the researcher found that most of the headteachers were of the opinion that promotion prospects satisfied teachers. On contrary the researcher found that teachers were not satisfied with a number of factors relating to promotion prospects such as advancement opportunities and inservice training. On reward system the researcher found that majority of headteachers (76%) said that teachers were satisfied by recognition from the school administrations. On contrary the data showed that teachers were not satisfied with factors relating to reward system. On challenging tasks majority of teachers on challenging tasks indicated that they were satisfied with general nature of work apart from teaching. On work environment majority of headteachers indicated that teachers were satisfied by the overall school environment apart from unavailability of school facilities and inadequacy of school instructional equipment. On work environment teachers concurred with headteachers responses. In view of findings and implication of the study, the researcher recommended there is need for the school administration to come up with modalities of improving academic perforinance so that achievement of organization goals can be enhanced. It was also recommended that aspects of promotion aspects such as advancement opportunities, in service training and growth should be enhanced by the TSC. The study recommends that some aspects of reward systems such as fringe benefits, recognition by school administration and reward for job well done are encouraged. On challenging tasks the researcher recommends that all teachers should be motivated to ensure they are retained in the teaching profession and this will reduce the turnover rate. Finally the researcher recommends school facilities and instructional equipments are provided to ensure teachers are comfortable in their working environment. For purpose of comparative study further research should be carried out on how teachers' demographic variables influence teachers' job satisfaction. Further studies should also be carried out to establish whether there is any significant relationship between teachers' motivational levels and job satisfaction. There should also be studies carried out to determine how learners' characteristics influence teachers job satisfaction and finally a study of factors influencing secondary school teachers job satisfaction should be carried out on larger districts, nationally, regionally and globally to find out how they compare with each other.en_US
