dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of headteechers' leadership styles on motivation of teachers in public primary schools in Wesdaads District, Nairobi County. Four research objectives were formulated to guide the study. The first objective was to establish the level of motivation among teachers in public primary schools; the second objective was to determine headteachers perception on their leadership styles; the third objective was to identify leadership styles used by headteachers and the fourth was to examine the methods used by headteachers to motivate teachers. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. The target population of teachers and headteachers from 26 public primary schools comprised of 501 and 26 respectively. The sample comprised of 117 teachers who were selected using simple ranodom technique from 14 public primary schools and 14 headteachers who were purposively selected because they were key informants to the study. The researcher relied on self-administered questionnaires. Data were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively. The findings revealed that teachers were highly motivated. They further revealed that head teachers had a positive perception of their leadership styles. It was evidenced that headteachers used democratic leadership styles which in tum influenced teachers motivation positively. In addition the findings indicated that headteachers used different methods of motivating teachers with wbieh the teachers were satisfied and motivated Based on the findings, the study concluded that teachers were highly motivated. Teachers felt that they would be recommended for further training, consulted, rewarded and involved in decision making if they executed their work. Majority of the headteachers always listened to teachers advice and problems and were used to make changes in consultation. For instance, teachers were highly satisfied with the way headteachers conducted themselves as role models and presented new challenges and projects. It was also concluded that headteachers used different methods to motivate teachers, which include certificate recommendation. promotions, tokens, luncheons or holidays outside or within the country and provision of conducive environment to work, Teachers were satisfied with the way headteachers performed their supervisory roles. From the findings, it was recommended that teachers should be motivated by use of external motivators to attain a decent standard of living and to counteract the internal motivation. It was also recommended that the goverment should have better remuneration of teachers to avoid demotivation. The Government through the Teachers Service Commission should also improve the working conditions of teachers. The study suggested that a study be conducted on whether there is any significant relationship between teachers motivational levels and their job performance. It was also suggested that studies be conducted on how headteachers demographic variables influenced teachers' motivation, and on how perfcrmance of administrative tasks impacts on teachers'motivation.en_US
