Influence of social stratification on academic performance of public and private secondary school students in Nairobi county
Abstract
The study focuses on the influence of social strati
fication on academic performance of secondary
school students. This was done on selected secondar
y schools in Nairobi County. The study was
carried out to investigate various dimensions of so
cial stratification that interact with each other
to have an impact on academic achievement of studen
ts. It assessed the role of school and home
in influencing academic performance of students. Fo
r the purpose of this study, data was
collected from three hundred students in both priva
te and public schools, fifty teachers and fifty
parents.
Primary data wascollected through structured questi
onnaires which were administered to selected
students and their teachers. Students and their hea
d teachers were required to fill in the structured
questionnaire.Secondary data wasobtained from revie
wing related literature which was useful for
the researcher to know what other researchers have
found out on the same topic as well as to
have a theoretical framework on which to base the c
urrent study.
Data was presented in form of graphs, pie charts, t
ables, simple percentages and in descriptive
words. The data was then subjected to vigorous anal
ysis which gave tangible outcome of the
study. The study intended to find out if social st
ratification is a major influence on academic
performance of students in Nairobi County.
