Factors Affecting the Performance of Girls in Mixed Day Secondary Schools in Githunguri District, Kiambu County

Abstract

This study sought to investigate the factors that affect the performance of girls in mixed day secondary schools in Githunguri District, Kiambu County. The study focused on the socio-cultural and economic factors that affect that performance. Data was collected using structmed interviews, key informants focused group discussions and secondary sources. Quantitative data from structured interviews was analysed using SPSS computer software whereas qualitative data from key informants and focused group discussions was analysed thematically.

The findings suggest that, in general, performance of girls in mixed day schools is dependent on the socio-cuhural as well as economic factors within the family and beyond. The evidence from this study suggests that socio-cultural factors that directly come from the households or families affect girls most. The main economic factor that affects girls' performance is fee payment. The study therefore recommends that the education fraternity should put in more effort to support girls since they are equally important as the boys are. This will ensure gender equity and equality.
