To improve performance in water sector, the Kenya government introduced water sector reforms that saw the separation of roles of the different actors in the sector. A number of institutions were created among them 8 Water Service Boards (WSBs) and' about 100 Water Service Providers (WSPs).The mandate of the WSBs through the WSPs is to ensure provision of efficient, affordable, reliable and sustainable water services. In spite of the reforms and an increase in funding in the sector, performance of WSPs in providing water services has remained rather poor and currently stands at 52% and 45% in urban and rural areas respectively. This study examined the factors affecting the performance of water service providers in Tana Water Service Board(TWSB) area by studying three variables related to the performance namely;ᄋ types of tariffs, benchmarking, governance structures. The study design was census survey and used questionnaires and observations to collect data from the WSPs in addition to secondary data which was obtained from TWSB, the WSPs and Water Services Regulatory Board (W ASREB). The collected data was analysed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) and the results presented in tables. The findings show that the three variables account for 68.4% of the performance of water service providers and that two of the variables (tariffs and governance) are significant predictors of performance of WSPs. The results of this study are important and will be helpful to the government, W ASREB, WSBs and other water service providers in formulating strategies and policies aimed at improving the performance of water service providers and other public institutions.en_US
