dc.description.abstract | The number of NGOs operating in Kenya continues to increase into the 21st century with the
roles that NGOs play in development also has continued to increase. At same time, donors have
shifted their funding channels to NGO‟s as that towards state projects declining. Project
managers are expected to complete their projects so that they can satisfy the objectives of the
main and secondary stakeholders within the set costs and deadline. In particular, project must
satisfy or meet stakeholder‟s needs in a positive manner. It was with this background that this
study set out to establish the determinants of implementation of NGO projects a case of World
Vision Osiligi IPA in the Kajiado County. The first objective of the study was to determine the
extent to which Non-Government Organization Management affects the implementation of
projects done by Non-Governmental Organizations in Kenya. The second objective of the study
was to examine the influence of Project Team on the implementation of projects done by NonGovernmental
Organizations in Kenya. The third objective of the study was to establish the
extent to which Community Participation influenced the implementation of projects done by
Non-Governmental Organizations in Kenya. The fourth objective of the study was to find out
how Government Involvement contributes to the implementation of the projects done by NonGovernmental
Organizations in Kenya. The study was conducted through a descriptive survey.
Data collection was done using questionnaires from a sample of 102 community members who
were selected randomly from the clusters. The project manager and project team were also
interviewed to give an inside look at the determinants of implementation of Non-Governmental
Projects. Selected key persons and community members were involved in a focus group
discussion. A response rate of 81.3% was achieved with data processing done using SPSS, while
analysis was done using percentages, tabulations, and chi-square test of hypothesis. The research
has shown that the community members felt that effective management, a competent project
team, community participation, and government involvement are all very important in
implementation of NGO projects in the area. However, respondents felt that they are not fully
involved in all stages of the project implementation, a situation that tends to make some projects
unsuccessful especially during the implementation period. The findings of the study show that
competent teams, government involvement, community participation and effective management
all have positive impact on the implementation of projects by NGOs. As such, the study
recommends NGOs need to embrace community participation and having a competent team in
their projects so that the projects can undergo smooth transition during implementation. In
addition, the study recommends projects to be initiated only when the sufficient donor funding is
available in order to ensure a smooth implementation of projects. In this regard, the study calls
for further research on the influence of donor funding in NGOs project implementation. | en_US |
