dc.description.abstractFrom clove buds Syzlglum aromaticurr. (family f'yrtaceae) obtained from a Nairobi market, the volatile oil was isolated and evaluated by 6team distillation method. The yield of the oil was 18.0 per cent on moisture - free basis. The physico-chemical properties of the oil were the following:- Density (d^ ) • . v Optical rotation (cX£“° ) 1 'I „ " pL* Refractive Index (n^ ) ‘ » * ’ * * T Solubility in 90$ alcohol Solubility in 70$ alcohol Phenolic content Acid value Thin layer and gas-liquid chromatographic studies stayed the oil contained 80.3**$ of eugenol which is the major component of the oil.en_US
