The initial aim of this work was to synthesise both Diazepam ( 7 chloro- 1,3 dihydro- I methyl- 5 phenyl 2H 14 benzodiazepin-2-one) and Oxazepam ( 7 chloro- 1,3 dihydro- 3 hydroxy- 5 phenyl- 2H 14 benzo- diazepin-2-one) However due to the failure to obtain, in good tine, commercial supplies of the intermediate 2- amino- 5 chloro- benzophenone ( 2 amino- 5 chlorophenyl- phenyl methanone ) it was not possible to synthesise the benzodiazepine nucleus. Hence this work mainly covers the synthesise of the 2 amino- 5 chloro benzophenone intermediate employing those chemicals that were available.en_US
