dc.description.abstractTwenty one children admitted to the Kenyatta National Hospital with sickle cell anaemia were studied with the aim of detecting the renal defects associated with this haemogloblnopathy. In a controlled study investigation was limited to simple, non-invasiva techniques which included urine analysis and culture, determination of creatinine clearance and urine flow rate, and a urine concentration test. Patients in sickle cell crisis were shown to have a reduced GFR and urine flow rate. A urine concentration impairment which has been shown in other studies was confirmed.
